From humble beginnings Disami Trends is fast growing to become Australia’s leading fashion house for traditional Indo-western ethnic wear with a modern flair. Founder and principal designer Sweta Rathod, together with her husband Digvijay welcome you and thank you for choosing Disami Trends.
Like so many other young Indians, coming to Australia in 2011 as a newly married couple Sweta (Sami to her family and friends) and Digvijay journeyed the path of merging cultures whilst still wanting to honour and enjoy their heritage. As a young mother Sweta found it challenging to be able to access the beautiful garments like she could back in India, in a foreign land.
“I remember I would be wanting to celebrate festivals and gatherings with friends and look my best and it was always hard to get the right traditional wear. What garments I could find here were just not the right customary standard I was used to.” Respect for tradition runs strong throughout all Indian families in Australia, an important issue the Rathod’s understand. “Even though we live in a new land with different cultures, being able to still celebrate the traditions of our heritage keeps us happy in our hearts and makes us feel more connected.”
Starting from her home in Melbourne Sweta began altering garments for family and friends so they could still wear traditional ensembles for special occasions. Slowly her talents lead to greater demands and with the support of her husband a new fashion house was created. Merging of the founders’ names (Digvijay and Sami) gave the Disami Trends label its name. Today their operations have expanded into offices in both Australia and India as they source only the best and authentic fabrics for their creations. The demand has grown so strong over the last few years that now is born their e-store for better ease of shopping.
“As a very busy wife and mother I know how hard it is to find the time to do all the things that need to be done. Shopping all over town to find the exact traditional garment for a special occasion takes so long. I wanted to remove those challenges and make it easier for all women anywhere to find truly beautiful yet truly authentic traditional wear, now anyone can shop at any time with our e-store. I am very passionate about ensuring that each of our garments are an individual piece of beauty. We work very hard to create intricate tailoring with grace and elegance for pieces that are unique yet affordable for any budget. Our collection includes Lehengas, Dupattas, Kurtis, Sarees, blouses, suits and menswear, we even have matching outfits for children to the parents. Everything from casual day wear to special occasion and even wedding.”
